Sinusitis
Sinusitis affects millions of Americans each year. Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane lining of the Sinus cavities. The cause of sinusitis can be due to infection, allergies or an injury to the nose.
Correct diagnosis from a Chinese Medicine perspective is essential for correct treatment, taking into account such signs at the color of the nasal discharge and the quality of the tongue coating.
From the Chinese Medicine perspective Sinusitis is due to 5 patterns of imbalance:
Patterns of Sinusitis
The pattern of Wind-Heat of Lung is mainly seen with changes in the weather.
The pattern of Damp Heat of Spleen/Stomach is mainly caused by greasy and hot/spicy dampening foods.
The pattern of Lung Qi Deficiency is caused by prolonged illness.
The pattern of Spleen Qi Deficiency is caused by irregular diet or worry.
The pattern of Stagnated Heat of Gallbladder is due to emotions affecting the Liver/Gallbladder channel.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbs deal very effectively with Sinusitis. Herbs can stimulate the immune system to reduce the production of mucus and reduce inflammation of the membranes. Some herbs work like herbal antibiotics to help rid the body of a bacterial Sinus infection. Acupuncture is particularly helpful to help the pain and headaches associated with Sinusitis and increases the flow of qi and blood to the area to heal the Sinuses.
