Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treats the whole person, not just the disease. We prescribe herbs according to many factors that may include the patient’s symptoms, pattern of imbalance, constitution, age, season, and others.
Every single group of people, of every single culture, and in every single country on this entire planet, has used herbal medicine since the beginning of time.
Originally published in 1596, the Chinese Materia Medica lists thousands of plants used for medicine. However, this information has been gathered and recorded since before the 3rd century BCE. Different parts of plants, such as the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, seeds, minerals, and some animal products are used in TCM. Herbs are often combined in formulas and given as teas, capsules, liquid extracts, granules, or powders.
Conditions like menopause, menstrual irregularities, migraines and chronic headaches, pain, and stress and anxiety are often alleviated with the use of certain herbal medicines. However, herbal medicine can treat any ailment due to the fact that acupuncturists treat a persons constitution and not just the symptoms.
At Merriam Park Acupuncture we use herbs from reliable sources only. We work with long-standing companies that have rigorous standards for quality assurance and control. Depending on the specific needs of the client, we prescribe herbal medicine in powder or pill form.
Your acupuncturist will likely want to meet with you at least three times before prescribing herbal medicine, unless you have an acute condition such as a common cold or acute pain, to get a full picture of your constitution. Instead of treating the symptoms of your ailment we are treating the whole picture, from lifestyle to physical stressors, in order to prescribe the right treatment. From there we will start small and determine the right dosage as your symptoms start to fade.
