Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treats the whole person, not just the disease. We prescribe herbs according to many factors that may include the patient’s symptoms, pattern of imbalance, constitution, age, season, and others.
Originally published in 1596, the Chinese Materia Medica lists thousands of plants used for medicine. However, this information has been gathered and recorded since before the 3rd century BCE. Different parts of plants, such as the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds, are used in TCM. Herbs are often combined in formulas and given as teas, capsules, liquid extracts, granules, or powders.
Conditions like menopause, menstrual irregularities, migraines and chronic headaches, pain, and stress and anxiety are often alleviated with the use of certain herbal medicines.
Often our practitioners will prescribe herbs in conjunction with other modes of treatment. We will run diagnostics and ask questions to see if an herb prescription would benefit you.
At Merriam Park Acupuncture we use herbs from reliable sources only. We work with long-standing companies that have rigorous standards for quality assurance and control. Depending on the specific needs of the client, we prescribe herbal medicine in powder or pill form.
Typically, our practitioners will prescribe herbs based on the patient’s medical history and genetic disposition. It’s important to keep in mind that herbal medicine works more slowly than traditional Western medicine.
